EXAMPLE

Intensive Waldorf School Health Support.

This is a practical example of how an intensive block of support can look like. This is based on previous experience of working with a number of schools with a variety of needs and their individual support structures and provisions that are already in place.

Step 1: Identify the needs

The school identifies the need for support of individual children relating to their mental or physical health or behavioural issues that impact their learning experience. For example, disruptive behaviour in class, anxiety, school avoidance, self-harm, eating disorder, childhood depression, chronic or recurring infections, tummy pains, headaches or migraines, post-viral fatigue, etc. Children with neurodiversity, gender dysphoria and dyslexia whose needs are not fully met by the school provision or via external support, which affects their learning.

Step 2: Identify who could benefit

The school prepares a list of children who would benefit from support and identifies one or two classes where there are several children with support needs or behaviour issues. The teacher prepares a list of all children and highlights any for specific questions to be answered.

Step 3: Initial assessment

The school and School Health agree on an initial assessment day, which could look like this: examples. A full day, from 8.30 to 17.30, with 60-minute slots for each class observation and initial consultation of individual children. Feedback sessions with the referring teacher and/or school pastoral care lead allow 10 minutes each. Additional time can be booked for teacher training or an educational talk for parents.

Step 4: Discussion

The multi-disciplinary school health team and the school’s wellbeing lead discuss the individual children to decide on further steps regarding therapeutic interventions, referral to other agencies, suggestions for adjustment or support within the school or by parents directly.

Step 5: Therapy sessions

A block of 12 therapy sessions per child takes place over a six-week period (one half-term).

Step 6: Evaluation and feedback

Parents and teachers are invited to give written or verbal feedback on progress to the School Health Team.
The School Health Team evaluates the feedback, and a follow-up visit by the school doctor and/or block of therapy is offered if required.

7. Follow-up block of therapy or visit
